40 Points Biography
The Paia, Hawaii-based band 40 Points gave concert audiences a taste of their debut album this summer, opening shows for American music icon Willie Nelson. The group will soon release their self-titled debut album on the newly formed Pedernales Records. The album was produced by noted producer James Stroud (Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Neil Diamond and Nelson among others), a partner in Pedernales Records.
The band was signed to Pedernales by Stroud and features Lukas Nelson on guitar and vocals, Micah Nelson on drums, Andrew Kloppel on bass and Tato Melgar on congas/percussion. 40 Points describe their sound as a mix of influences such as rock, folk, blues and Latin.
“They’re a great example of what we want to sign to the label,” says Stroud. “They’re not country, they’re not pop. They’re just great artists. And we want to make sure they’re able to be exactly who they are.” The album includes a guest appearance by Willie Nelson – also a partner in Pedernales Records – on a song he co-wrote, “There Are No Words.”
Members of the group have opened shows for Los Lonely Boys, UB40, The Doobie Brothers and Jack Johnson and appeared at such festivals as the Maui Music Festival and Willie Nelson’s annual Fourth of July Picnic. Lukas and Micah have also proven their talents in their performances with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan on the summer 2005 Nelson/Dylan tour of minor league ballparks, earning them media note and critical acclaim, including a recent interview with Lukas in Rolling Stone. LA Weekly notes that “Lukas does terrific electric blues guitar, while Micah led on drums for about half the show – not bad when the guy you’re sitting in for is Paul English.” At another appearance, the San Antonio Express-News praised Lukas’ “blazing cover of Texas blues guitar wizard Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Flood Down in Texas.’” The Seattle Post-Intelligencer also recently praised his ability to “play a fiery Stevie Ray Vaughan-style guitar solo.”
